This has to be one of my favorite country albums right now. It is everything I remember about Brad Paisley and more. One of the many reasons I love Brad Paisley so much is that he writes about just about anything. Now #2 and #3 of the album have already got tons of radio play so you will recognize them. From the down home feel of Southern Comfort Zone, to the memories that you get trapped in when listening to Beat this summer you will be so happy Brad has new music. Now the next song on the cd isn't my favorite but it will most definitely be one of the singles released on to radio. Firstly because it has Walker Hayes and Deirks Bently on it, and Secondly because it is a country party song if I ever heard one. Of all the songs on this cd the two that are my favorite are ones most people won't like. #8 on this cd is called Karate, and it makes me smile everytime I hear. It's about a girl who is being abused by her boyfriend/husband/db of a man and has finally had a enough and is taking Karate so she can one day soon have a belt to match her eye. It is so Brad Paisley through and through. It's quirky and so real, and it makes me want to sing along. Now my second favorite song on this cd is #16 Those Crazy Christians. This song moves me because I was raised Christian, and while my beliefs have changed from what my parents and family thinks, to what I believe. I am Christian. And this song moves me because my friend base is mostly pagan, very few christians and I wonder if they look at me the way this song portrays. I hope they do because I think every word is truly what a Christian is, from forgiveness to that casserole you bring to someone's house when they are mourning. So I give this cd an amazing review. Because in reality brad is a story writer with a good voice. Everybody may not like what his stories say, but they listen because its hard not to.

Already several songs have made my playlist. How does he keep doing it. I love the guest artists as well. He and LL have hit a home run
ReplyDeleteI laughed, I cried, I danced. This album has it all. Brad Paisley has outdone himself. I am not the biggest country fan, but, this one is a keeper!
ReplyDeleteI own all of Brad's albums and this one is my favorite so far. He really stepped outside the box most people put country music in but at the same time long time fans of his should see that the roots are still the same, he's just expanding his range and trying new things.
ReplyDeleteWhen listening to this new project by Brad, consider this: When all is said and done, the essence of great country music is great storytelling. That being said, this is a most excellent work by Mr. Paisley. He IS in the "wheelhouse" of what country music is all about, and at the hub of that wheel. Don't let anything anyone says distract you from that simple truth. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI love this album. The guitar playing is new and fresh and I love how BP throws in some slide guitar on a few solos which are some of the finest since Leroy Parnell. And all the controversy about it is complete BS. This album sets a new standard in Country music.
ReplyDeletePerhaps Brad's most ambitious effort yet. It's the kind of album that an artist puts out when he is fully comfortable in his own skin and ready to get a little experimental. Musicianship is excellent. Songwriting is stellar...especially on two tracks: Accidental Racist and Those Crazy Christians. If you buy this CD only for those two songs, it is well worth your money.
ReplyDeleteI love this cd, it is one of his funniest yet. My husband and I enjoyed it from beginning to end.

ReplyDelete"When the old wheelhouse is the land of cotton / the first time you leave / it can be strange, it can be shocking."
ReplyDeleteSo begins Brad Paisley's latest album "Wheelhouse," and so sets the tone of the album. It will be strange and shocking to some, if not a lot of, people. Musically, there is a lot new about Brad's new album, and upon first listen, it may throw some listeners a curve ball that they are not expecting. Upon first listen, I wasn't sure how I felt about it. But the more I listened, the better I felt about it.
Brad certainly does leave his wheelhouse on this album, even saying in the liner notes that going into the studio to record, the whole idea was to "throw out the rule book."
When first listening, I found a couple of duds, but after subsequent listens, I can only really name one real dud: "Death of a Married Man." It's not so much that the track is bad...in fact, it's too short to really qualify as anything. And considering what he does a few tracks later with "Death of a Single Man," if more effort had been put into "Married Man," it would have been an excellent opportunity for two parallel songs. Unfortunately, this is not what we get. One other complaint is Brad's standard instrumental on this album. Musically, it feels out of place and doesn't even come close to the greatness of "Eastwood," from "This Is Country Music." However, it does lead quite well into, and almost feels like an extended musical intro to, "Karate," which is a really cool track.
"Beat This Summer," the album's second single, is a cool track with some fun guitar work and will surely work as a fun summer anthem. "Pressing on a Bruise" is a great ballad and "Tin Can On a String" is easily one of my Top 5 Brad Paisley songs and the absolute best song on the album.
Of course, it wouldn't be a review if I didn't mention the controversial and highly talked about "Accidental Racist." It's clear what Brad's intentions on the song are and having LL Cool J join him on the song certainly helps. As Brad said, the song is meant to get people to talk...that's the whole point. Whether it succeeds or fails in what it attempts to do is something each listener will have to judge for his or her self.
Overall, Brad's new album is, more or less, a masterpiece, with few missteps along the way. It easily falls into Brad's Top 3 albums, just behind "This Is Country Music" and "American Saturday Night."
