Great J Edgar Blu ray Leonardo Dicaprio

J Edgar Blu ray Leonardo Dicaprio

Leonardo Dicaprio seems to get better with every film he's in. Ever since "The Aviator", he(in my opinion) has shaken off the persona that he still acts like that golden-haired boy from "Titanic".But I have watched him grow with every moviemaking feat, and with "J.Edgar",he lands a knockout punch in evoking hoover's mannerisms and posture,as well as the man's voice(to some extent).Clint Eastwood's biopic is not a masterpiece, but it is masterful. His direction is unhurried, and he does manage to not make Hoover an All-American good guy, taking quick but hard looks at his abuses of power.Anyone who thinks Dicaprio still can't act,or who have strong animosities toward Hoover period- should leave their opinions at the door and give this film a decent viewing or two. One of the things that surprised me about "J.Edgar" was that it was not longer, compared to "Malcolm X","JFK",and "Nixon".But I was not dissapointed, and the rest of the cast was impressive, particularly The Great Judi Dench as Hoover's mother. All in all,Eastwood's portrait of the very secretive and very troubled public figure is a tremendous acheivement, not just as a biopic but as a period piece as well.Leonardo should strive for more roles like this, but I am assured that he's well on his way as a dramatic actor.

  1. Clint Eastwood, Dustin Lance Black and Leonardo DiCaprio join forces to understand the 20th century's most admired, hated and controversial man, J. Edgar Hoover (with a tour de force performance by DiCaprio).

Let me first say that when I first heard of this project in the works I virtually knew very little about the F.B.I founder. I had however seen great depictions by actors like Bob Hoskins, Vincent Gardenia, Billy Crudup and more recently by Enrico Colantoni. All good performances without a doubt but only two dimensional portrayals. Here DiCaprio creates a 5th dimensional character that the audience can try to more or less understand.

The film spans nearly 50 years in the history timeline, jumping timeframe by time frame and creating a rich tapestry of political drama and turmoil in our nation's history. DiCaprio plays both the young, ambitious and advanced Hoover as well as the old, embittered czar whom all politicians feared by the 1950's.Armie Hammer plays his protege and second man in the Bureau Clyde Tolson. Hammer is the soul and conscience of the film as well as Hoover's constantly ignored emotions. Judi Dench, Naomi Watts and Jeffrey Donovan turn in great performances as well. The screenplay is rich and meticulously researched and Eastwood's direction has perfected greatly to the point of crafting his most ambitous, and richest project since his excellent "Flags/Letters" duo.

If you enjoy history, historical dramas, this is for you. A thought provoking, psychological insight into this man's soul and heart and the effect he had on this nation's history. One of the most chilling moments in the film happens toward end when a anxiously devastated Hoover witnesses the inaugural of Richard Nixon amd almost forsees the devastation that will befall the U.S. with the race riots, Vietnam, protesting students and assasination of MLK and etc, while "Star and Stripes Forever" plays in the background and if the audience undertands it, they begin to mourn the death of our nation.

Eastwood almost mirrors Oliver Stone in a more calm way but by the end of the film your opinion is yours and yours alone. I watched this 5 times in theatres and I would damn well watch it again because it is simply an American Masterpiece from an American Master who has clearly matured and seen the significant changes in our country. I can only hope this review does this film justice for all the misjudgements there have been about it. Frankly, it is the best picture of the year!!

  2. "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely." This movie is, I think, rather unfairly criticized by several Amazon reviews because it's an exercise in watching power corrupt and, as such, has multiple "squirm" moments. Those of us who grew up with JEH in the '60's were delighted when the horrible old man died, and I think there are many out there judging this film by the fact that, whatever good he did for the FBI, Hoover became anathema to civil libertarians everywhere. But Clint Eastwood and his creative staff have done something far more difficult than skewering a sexually ambiguous reactionary. This movie makes Hoover a person, not just an icon - tormented, megalomaniac, obsessive-compulsive, and far too screwed up to ever come out of the closet, but a man who also believed passionately in his version of America. He built up the science of American law enforcement almost single-handedly with an obsessive focus that may not be admired, but certainly will never be surpassed. Clint Eastwood's direction is without flaw and Leonardo DiCaprio is brilliant - by far the most difficult, nuanced performance I have ever see him give. All the actors are excellent, although particular standouts are Armie Hammer's very good Clyde Tolson and Judi Dench, playing Hoover's mother without tripping over a single stereotype. The whole team are very good indeed and I honor their fairness in trying to find the man behind the mask - even if, once found, he terrifies me.

  3. J. Edgar is a compassionate and honest look
    at the man,
    his intentions,
    and his contributions.

    DiCaprio raised the dead.

    Well Done.

  5. This is a great movie and went along with the true history of the man, except he did not wear his TuTu. Should of been an Oscar here for Leo.
