Energizer HD33A1EN 3 LED Headlight

Saturday night, 6/27/10, I was out fishing with my buddy, and I was wearing the everyready 3-led headlight. To make a long story short, we were in the Long Beach Harbor, and as we went across a channel opening, we got hit by a big wave, and capsized. I jumped in cannonball-style, but didn't go under. The lamp, which was on, stayed on my head, and when we swam over to the now upside-down boat, and hung onto it for dear life, I had my buddy, who was prone on the hull of my little 13 foot aluminum skiff, waving the headlamp at a tugboat that was coming out to escort a freighter into the harbor. We were able to get their attention, and after 25 minutes of hanging off the boat in icy Pacific waters, we were pulled aboard a Long Beach Lifeguard boat. If I hadn't been wearing the headlamp, I doubt we could have gotten their attention, as it was about Midnight. I'm quite humbled by the fact that this headlamp was bright enough to catch the attention of a tugboat captain at about 100 yards. I'm getting the headlamp a fresh set of batteries for my new birthday, cause I woulda been a goner without it.

  1. It's not too big or heavy. It's got a thick pad for your forehead. The strap is adjustable. It takes regular aaa batteries like you already have in your drawer. The choice of 1 red or 2 white l.e.d's are on a hinge so you can direct the light. The on/off switch is easy to find and adjust from touch. There are bigger brighter headlamps out there but if you want the smallest lightest one you can get away with this is a really good choice.

  2. I ordered one of these headlamps to keep in the car for any night-time emergencies. For the price, this light is really great and worth a 5 star rating in my opinion, but it's not as fancy as some. I've also got a Black Diamond Helion LED Headlamp (more than 3 times the cost of this unit) that I have used almost daily for the last 2 or 3 years, and am making some comparisons to that.

This light is surprisingly bright, with the beam being a somewhat defined medium-diameter spot. It's not as bright as those lights with the new Luxeon LEDs but it's very bright and won't wear down the batteries as fast as a Luxeon LED. The projected beam is not totally even in color on my unit, with a slight yellower cast projected near the middle of the spot and a blue-purple tint at the outer edges of the projected spot. This may not be a big deal for some, and may be due to the magnifiers used on the lens.

While wearing the lamp, I noticed some reflection of light off of my eyebrows. They're not huge eyebrows or anything, but it was a slight distraction and is due to the lens projecting out slightly from the front of the light.

The headband is adequate and can be snugged-up nicely, and would fit a child too. The single band is not as secure feeling as those lights with an additional band that goes over the top of one's head, and may be prone to sliding down with a lot of vertical body motion like running, etc.

The pivoting lamp housing makes it easy to adjust the vertical beam position, with its smooth movement, swinging down and away from the battery compartment. Some other lights ratchet up and down in their adjustment.

The red LED seems handy for night vision and has even red lighting (not as much of a spot as the white). The housing seems consistent with price (plastic and inexpensive feeling), with a snap-off battery cover which feels a bit fragile if one were not careful with it. But over-all, this seems to be a great deal for the price.

  4. This is best headlamp I have found for reading a paperback or Kindle. I have tried about a dozen different headlamps looking of one that is good for reading a paperback while laying in bed with the lights out. If you are looking for a headlamp for reading in bed this is the one.

    Here is why.
--Nice round white beam that is slightly larger than the size of one page of a trade paperback or the width of my Kindle.
--The light beam is very even. There are no bright spots or dark spots. This means there are no nasty reflections off of the surface of my Kindle.
--30 LUMENS is just right for reading not too bright or too dark.
--There are two adjustors at the back of the headband that are NOT directly on the back of your head. This makes it very comfortable to use while resting your head on pillow.
--The light pivots almost 180 degrees for easy adjustment up and down.
--uses 3 AAA batteries, very easy to find at any store.
    --very light weight.

  5. I wear this at work, strapped to my hardhat like a miner. It is very bright, and the batteries last a long time. I don't use the redlight feature, just the white. I got tired of holding my Maglite between my teeth to work with both hands.

  6. I purchased one recently, and I love it! It's very light weight since it uses LED bulbs, and is very bright. I bought it for myself, but it turns out the kids love it too. They strap it on and play explorer, and they love the red bulb feature. I'm buying them as gifts for all my nephews.

  7. I love the fact that this uses LEDs and common (AAA) batteries. This is very bright - plenty of light for anything I might want to do. The fact that it has a Red LED, to preserve night vision, is icing on the cake. I ordered one the first time around, then went back and ordered several more to be used as gifts. (My nephew is going to love it!)

Update: Subtract 1 star because I found it turned on in the pocket of my backpack. (It appears that the slider switch moves a bit too easily. I may try something like a rubber band wrapped around the light to try to keep the switch from moving.)

On the other hand, add back 1/2 star due to the fact that the light swivels up and down so you can direct the light where you need it.

Still comes out at 4.5 stars for me.

  8. I love the red led option. I use it for reading star charts when taking kids on astronomy hikes.
