Nile Rodgers on guitar!

I recently re-listened to both Revanche and a group called Macho, both of whom I first heard in dance clubs years ago. I'm not sure if their producers were inspired by the far goofier (and more succcessful) Village People, but the end result was a really cool sub-genre of dance music that was what I thought of as "chest thumping music." As such, the arrangements are really pretty intricate and pulsate with musical muscle and rhythmic testosterone. I suspect some dismissed these records as fake fantasy of such cheesiness they could not be taken seriously, but a serious listen to not only the music but the lyrics reveal these tracks expressed the sentiments of gay men who weren't about to be oppressed or crapped on by anyone anymore. The tracks themeselves, especially "Revenge", "Music Man", and "I'm a Man" were wonderfully expressive midnight nocturnes to virility and men who loved being men. They are wonderfully arranged and take you on a sex-soaked journey that includes some of the hottest instrumental breakdowns I've ever heard in dance tracks! The production was anything but "cheesy", but rather complex, evocative, and majestic by dance music standards. If Tom of Finland men had a soundtrack, these tracks would be it. The Revanche album on Atlantic is, to me, a classic. Not every song was as strong as the ones mentioned, but both Revenge and Music Man alone are worth the cost of the album. It's an overlooked part of dance music history, but potent stuff that is anything but silly camp. Listen with headphone s if you must and crank it up: These are the boys from the opposite side of the tracks from the Village People, and they're not to be messed with.

  6. I've heard these on the radio, where they insert the name of a professional sports team instead of the original lyrics. Are these just radio edits or can I download these somewhere online?
