Tom Tierney first made his name as a paper-doll art ist in 1975 with Paperdolls for Grownups: Thirty from the '30's:Costumes of the Great Stars, and ever since then he's divided his time about equally between movie-star and historic-costume doll books. This is the most recent of the former. Betty Grable is perhaps best remembered for the iconic bathing-suit photo showcasing her ideally proportioned legs (famously insured for $1,000,000) that made her a World War II pin-up, but she also had a film career that lasted over 25 years and often showcased not only her legs but the rest of her figure as well--and then went on to appear on stage , in 1965, in the title role of "Hello, Dolly!" The costume s recreated in this collection date from Melody Cruise [VHS] in 1933 to the Dolly Levi role, and there are 28 of them in all, from "showgirl specials" like Tin Pan Alley [VHS], The Dolly Sisters, and Mother Wore Tights [VHS] to the floor-length skirt and bell-shaped sleeves of 19th-century America in Farmer Takes a Wife [VHS]. All are beautifully executed in full color, with loving detail. Collectors of Tierney's work will not be disappointed, and those unfamiliar with him may well be hooked.
