Hip Hop Abs Extreme Workout

I started using the very first Hip Hop Abs workouts many moons ago and later moved on to both Level 2 and the Dance Party series. I love the dance element to these workouts, and I still use all of them fairly regularly, even after four years (usually in a rotation with Turbo Jam and Zumba for variety). Still, it had been a while since I'd seen a new HHA workout, so I was psyched to recently discover Hip Hop Abs Extreme. I ordered the DVD right away and was thrilled to discover that Shaun-T had brought the goods once again!

EXTREME ABS is only about 10 minutes long, but it's an intense 10 minutes of standing crunches and floor work like push-ups, planks, and leg-raises. Floor stuff isn't my favorite, but this is great if you just want to do a quick workout that you'll still feel afterward (literally, the workout is so intense that I had to pause the video three times for breaks. Three times in 10 minutes!). EXTREME CARDIO, however, is 55 minutes of sweaty, high-impact, high-fun cardio. The moves are quicker-paced and progress faster than in previous HHA cardio workouts, which keeps your heart rate up, and the last fifteen minutes incorporate weights and focus on strength training (push-ups, standing crunches, etc., akin to the Total Body Burn workouts from previous HHA series). Also, while there are a few new moves and the sequences are more intense, a lot of the basic movements are the same as in previous HHA installments, which made it easy for me to follow even the first time through.

To that end, if you've never done Hip Hop Abs before, you may be a little lost if you start the program with this DVD. Whereas I knew exactly what to expect when Shaun announced that the next move was "Night Fever," "Hammer," "Roll In," etc., I could easily see a newbie being confused by that kind of lingo. If you can pick up on new movements easily then you'll probably get the hang of everything after a couple times through the DVD, but I'd actually recommend starting with Hip Hop Abs Level 1 (HIP HOP ABS DVD Set - 6 Workouts Set) or Level 2 (HIP HOP ABS by Shaun T - Maximum Results Set - Level 2 - Fat Burning Cardio, Ab Sculpt, Total Body Burn). There is a method to this madness, and I think the exercises are more effective if you really follow the 3T: Tilt, Tuck, and Tighten method that Shaun introduces in the first set of workouts -- and I think it's easier to hone that method if you start off a little slower.

That said, I'd highly recommend Hip Hop Abs Extreme, particularly to other Hip Hop Abbers who have enjoyed Shaun's previous installments. This DVD offers two fun, effective workouts, and I hope Shaun T keeps these kinds of routines coming!
