I love Death Road Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden's sixth double live album entitled Death On the Road was released in October of 2005.
Once Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith rejoined Steve Harris, Dave Murray, Nicko McBrain and Janick Gers in 1999, Iron Maiden just got better and better and releasing excellent albums and tours making you forget that the 1990s never happened. When Iron Maiden hit the road to support their brilliant (but underrated) followup to 2000's comeback Brave New World entitled Dance of Death, the band decided to begin documenting all tours since then starting with Rock in Rio in 2002. Then in the fall of 2005, the band released Death On the Road. This show was recorded at the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund, Germany (the famed venue that the band 20 years earlier killed their mascot Eddie on stage ) by Kevin Shirley (who co-produced this with Steve Harris). This live album is a stellar document of a tour which I missed due to the fact that the band only played in two US cities the whole tour so a live document is welcome for me (as I found out in January of 2006 and recently rediscovered).
We begin things with entrance music which segues into a stellar "Wildest Dreams" which rocks in concert. Next is a stellar version of "Wrathchild" (though it is a repeat from Rock in Rio). Next is an excellent "Can I Play With Madness" (only the Maiden England '88 version is superior). We then have a song which was also on Rock in Rio (as well as Live After Death) "The Trooper" which is always brilliant live. Next is a stellar live version of of the title cut to Dance of Death which is superior to the studio version. We follow with a great version of "Rainmaker" which rocks. Next is another song which was on the previous live album as well "Brave New World" and is good but hard to top Rock in Rio's version. Next is the stellar epic "Paschendale" and is superior to its studio counterpart by a longshot. We close the first CD with "Lord Of the Flies" which is better than the version that appeared on the 1995 disaster known as The X Factor (I didn't like Blaze Bayley, he sounded like Bruce come David Lee Roth IMHO).
Disc two begins with the live version of No More Lies" which just rocks and superior to the Dance of Death version. Next is a song that is normally played on the encores "Hallowed Be Thy Name" and is excellent. We follow with "Fear Of the Dark" which is a very good version. We close the show with the band's theme song "Iron Maiden" and a great live version it is. It's one of the best I heard (this was previously on The Essential Iron Maiden compilation as a taster for this album and on that version, it is longer as Bruce kept the crowd going before the final section and blurted "HERE'S EDDIE" in the vein of the late Ed McMahon saying his trademark "Here's Johnny")! Now the first encore is the closing track to the Dance of Death album which is the beautiful "Journeyman" which is the band playing acoustic guitars with Nicko's drumming and Bruce's vocal being so exquisite. We follow with "The Number of the Beast" which is the band's signature song and no Maiden show would be complete without it. We close the album with a stellar version of "Run to the Hills"!
Death On the Road was wrongly ignored upon its release as everyone was either angry that Maiden released another live album too soon or whatever was the case, however Death on the Road has held up well since its 2005 release.
Highly recommended!
