Great Life Love Blues Etta James
I personally think that this is the best of the late Etta James recordings (it was nominated for a Grammy the year it was released), but her career spanned over half a century, so there is a lot to choose from. She has a smooth singing style as opposed to the shouting style of some blues vocalists, a magnificent voice, and tends to blend the original soul type blues with the modern blues that use a full orchestra.
It is a slower style rather than the boogie-woogie style found in many later blues musicians. The backup musicians tend to stay in the background (not competing with the vocalist) unless they may have a short solo. Musicians include Donto James (drums, percussion), Sametto James (bass), Dave Mathews (keyboards), Mike Finnigan (Hammond B-3 Organ), Tom Poole (trumpet), Bobby Murray (guitars with some solos), Josh Sklair (guitars, dobro, with some solos), Jimmy "Z" (saxes, harmonica, with some solos), Leo Nocentelli (guitars, octave box guitar, with a solo and a lead), Lee Thornburg (trumpet, valve trombone). It is a studio recording produced at Fort Athens Studio in Riverside, California.
Etta James is gone but not forgotten.
